268907  ThoughtlessGentleman: "I just shat myself unexpectedly."

268376  Science: @tib gubb: "Distress signal" implies the grass is giving a warning. That smell is the release of chemicals that seal up the cut portion of the plant. That's it. Plants don't have a brain or central nervous system, and therefore, cannot feel pain. They can produce a response to stimuli, but that isn't the same as responding to pain.

268386  Science: @wordjones: "Man Attacked by Babies." It's in Oslo. There are a LOT of weird naked statues in that park.

268903  MrBoffo: Oooohhh - got it down to 1

268899  Shay: DENTAL PLAN

268903  Shay: How?

originaluser: @Science Agreed that it is in no way equal to actual blackface. It is simply a way of describing how it is intended to use stereotypes of a certain group as entertainment for people not within that group.
Science: @Dr Awkward: I agree that it isn't a very good show, but calling it "black face for nerd culture" is incredibly insensitive to actual people who were (and are) are actually marginalized and victims of racism, not a bunch of nerds being angry that TV characters aren't truly nerdy.
Science: @dangerous dave: Lighten up, Sheldon.
dangerous dave: If you don't mortally despise this show, it's probably because three or four hundred of your clisest friends haven't, individually and at various times, called you 'Sheldon'.
grizzly: This show is like Jimmy Buffet. I don't HATE BBT or Buffet (although I don't particularly like them) but I DO hate the fans that are in love with them.
zupobaloop: @Sadbot Please dont get me wrong. This show isn't very good. But the 'science jokes' aren't looked up, they're written by actual physicists. The stupid DVD-extras have them explaining every last one in stupid boring detail. (My wife is a fan, so I've seen all that)
jochenau: I try to make the world a better place by recommending IT Crowd whenever someone suggests that I'd enjoy BBT.
White Rice: @Dr Awkward ah, that I can understand completely (While I don't get show recommendations, I do have the joy of nearly all of my extended family being Fox News watchers, and most of my friends being the polar opposite, so anytime I look at facebook it's a 50/50 split of wether Obama/trump is the anti-Christ/Jesus himself back to fix everything, with a sprinkling of "both sides are wrong, comrade!" that has a "how do you do, fellow kids?" feel to it). Hmm, that's a lot in parenthesis for that brief of an actual response; kinda proud of myself there.
White Rice: @ChubbyBuddy full disclosure: while both shows had some bits I enjoyed, more often than not I was either indifferent or actively displeased with what I was watching. They (like most standard broadcast sitcoms) just kind of fell into a "turn off your brain & enjoy the noise" sort of niche to me (didn't help that that'd be what the family was watching, so that was that).
RzK: @White Rice I would be happy to simply ignore this show, but somehow people really like it and keep on trying to convince me that I would really like it.
White Rice: @Dr Awkward I just used them as examples that everybody at least knows of, but yeah, they were more "generic, ultimately not too offensive" sitcom than ""science/nerd culture" your relative who forwards moronic emails about Bill Gates giving away Nigeria can understand" sitcom. Nerd blackface is a good way of putting it though, I'll not argue that. It's just that it's one of those things where the people who understand what's wrong with it have little/no say in making it, so it'll neither improve nor go away so long as it makes money with the current effort put forth. I just can't muster the same rage over it that others can, kind of like Adam Sandler movies (though I haven't watched anything he's done recently either, despite Netflix's best efforts)
ChubbyBuddy: @White Rice Rosanne and Seinfeld are cultural touchstones. Big Bang Theory is what you watch because the tv at the Super 8 only gets TBS
 m o l e m a n: #191113 was where we last discussed this image
Amiga 1000: @White Rice this is far worse than rosanne or Seinfeld, and I don't particularly like either of those. This show is actively bad, and as one of our fellow aggronauts mentioned previously, this is like "black face for nerd culture"
uncannie: @apoxia Yes I agree, Friends is a terrible show also
apoxia: I was complaining about this show with friends just yesterday.
Sadbot: Is "oh no, a girl! Science reference the writers looked up on wikipedia!" not enough jokes for this snarkmaster?
White Rice: I had this whole thing written out, but I'm shortening/simplifying because of space & deciding I don't care as much as the post would have implied. It's a sitcom in syndication, it isn't going to be one of the great works of any era/generation, let the masses have their simple, geek-chique show. It wasn't written for anyone who'd take it as seriously as any character depicted in it would take it, so don't become the characture that you're mocking. It's about as important as Roseanne or Seinfeld (ultimately: not very important). It's just a show.
