Side Boob: @Yam I agree. There are always other factors at play, and you have named quite a few good ones (don't get me started on corn subsidies). I still maintain that in most cases, 98% of the blame rests on the individual. Just my $.02
Mr. Butt: @Yurishiro July 9. Easy to remember, because it's also Tom Hanks' birthday.
Yam: @Side Boob Theres a lot of truth and insight in what youre saying, and I think personal responsibility is a major contributor, but I do think there are other factors at play. I think the food pyramid and decades of telling people to eat low fat have done a lot of harm. I think corn subsidies have too. Propagation of fad diets and supplements and super foods have fucked with a lot of peoples good intentions. Food desserts are a real problem. There are a lot of changes we can make as a society to help the problem, apart from solely relying on every individuals sense of responsibility.
Side Boob: @Yurishiro Tolerance and support are what everyone needs. Unfortunately it's in short supply.
Yurishiro: @Mr. Butt Wow, some memory you have there mr butt I bet you never forget mrs butt birthday!
Yurishiro: @Side Boob I completely agree, but it's not so easy for most People to be as brave as you to admit all of that. Facing ourselves and Facing our faults and responsibilities, realizing where we are wrong and where we are right requires very deep thinking, courage and strenght of character. Some People can easily, other not easily at all. There even are some People Who when forcefully put to face their faults, upon realization can't even bear to live with it and commit suicide. The key is in tolerance and supportive advice
Side Boob: Real Talk: I'm overweight because I'm lazy. It's all my fault. I eat too much crap food, even though there are healthy choices available to me. I can cook, but I choose not to. If I'm too large for an airline seat, automobile, whatever, it's my fault. Nobody owes me wider seats or larger doors. Getting fat is easy. Like really easy. Losing the weight is hard. It's been this way forever, long before fast food and fizzy sodas that everyone likes to blame. The problem, outside of glandular issues and drug side effects, rests solely on the person. I'd love someone to blame for my being overweight, but it's my fault. The REAL issue is that nobody wants to accept responsibility for their actions.
Yam: @Sadbot I agree with that as well. There are a lot of systemic challenges to attaining better health as it relates to weight, as well as when it doesnt. The economic realities of a huge portion of people in western society make healthy living incredibly difficult. The North American food system is at the very least misguided, if not broken. Access to competent health care is still not nearly as universal as I feel it ought to be. My feeling on fat acceptance is that its a positive thing and helps everyone to feel good in their body, I just worry at times it covers for some of the more societal level challenges people face, and in some extreme cases, counteracts attempts to help people live healthier lives (for example, the backlash against Michele Obamas work to improve the qualit
Yam: @jochenau Completely agree. I think the best way forward is to encourage everyone to make heathiet lifestyle choices by being supportive, not judgemental. Fat acceptance is a great thing on the whole, I just feel like at times it gets seen as being in opposition to fitness and nutrition influencers, when I think the two can be quite complementary.
Sadbot: @jochenau @Yam Unfortunately most people like to attack the victims of systemic problems rather than the systems. I would bet my meager savings on an enforced 36hr work week reducing the average weight of U.S. citizens. I used to have a job around those hours and I felt great having an entire afternoon mid-week to get some exercise or cook a decent meal. The real disgusting moral failures are the people who work us to death with no time off for stress release.
Robespierre: @Yam If that's the case, perhaps we should also be more realistic about the challenges the widespread plague of people living past the age of 50 poses to the healthcare system as well.
jochenau: @Yam I think we should definitely acknowledge and be aware of the health problems associated with obesity, but I also think we should stop treating fat people as moral failures and objects of disgust.
Yam: Im all for fat acceptance as long as were still realistic about the challenges widespread obesity poses to the healthcare system, if that makes sense?
Side Boob: How is it decolonization? Are you being kicked out of America? Denied the opportunity to go to Mars, maybe?
WTF: @Mr. Butt Unfortunately she's still waiting.
