253899 White Rice: @AlexDeLarge well, that's what the clickbait sites kept trying to "report" for a while (and diamonds, styrofoam cups, and a bunch of other random things)

253747 IKEA Lady: Improper handling aid

253831 Mad Collager: @a robot As others have said, protest. It may not seem like much, but it really can make a difference. Also, a fellow protestor told me to write letters to whatever shithead department is doing what angers you most. Not e-mails, but real, paper letters. She said they HAVE to respond to letters, and it slows them down, so they don't have as much time to do their shitty stuff.

BavidDowie: @Science Roman roads weren't built by slaves. They were built by legionaries who were citizen soldiers. It's possible that slaves local to the area of construction helped haul materials in, but we aren't talking armies of slave labor.
Science: @Greek Fire: Yes, but stone does tend to be more resilient than composite materials, and especially tarmac. Roman roads also didn't have the tremendous weights and traffic flows that roads today do. Plus slavery makes it super cheap and easy to produce wonders that last throughout the ages.
VeeKay: @FarmerWalk Not for the last 1650 years. (The Via Romana is 1700 or so years old).
VeeKay: Via Romana. Obviously, the threat was if you didn't build it to last for an eternity you would be executed for incompetence. Lol at paradox.
BavidDowie: It's like they took pride in their work.
Dr Awkward: NOT MY LOCAL HIGHWAY. I CANNOT RELATE.
mrd0t: Duh, if you engineer it to last 1,800 years, you aren't paying the same company to maintain it every couple of years.
square44: @eider and if anything ancient wasn't over engineered it's not there anymore.
eider: Also, like you said Roman roads weren't just flat rocks on diet, they were many feet deep, using layers of different grades of rock and stone to ensure they would be level and last. Like you said, they over engineered the fuck out of it. History is rad.
eider: @Greek Pretty much everything In history was over engineered because they didn't have stress testing, computer simulations, etc. It's only been in the last 60 years or so that stuff has been engineered to more or less last as long as needed, which I guess is why these days stuff ends up breaking just out of warranty and why you still see tools and equipment 100 years old or more that could still be used today. They didn't know exactly how strong things needed to be so they just made everything hella strong just to be sure.
Greek Fire: The Romans "over"-engineered the fuck out of everything they built, which is why so much of it is still standing. That road is almost certainly dug straight down to bedrock.
Skinr: I lived in Louisiana for over 15 years; they could teach the Romans a thing or two about ancient, uneven roads.
